Tuition Assistance for Service members was established by Public Law and is implemented by a DoD Directive and DoD Instruction. A uniform tuition assistance fiscal policy by the Department of Defense (DoD) is in place across all uniformed services.
A semester hour cap of $250 is in place along with a fiscal year maximum tuition assistance coverage cap of $4500.00 for each member using coast Guard Tuition Assistance. College courses (graduate, undergraduate) will be paid at 100 percent of the cost of an Institution's tuition for each course. The maximum payable per Semester Hour is $250.00, or Quarter Hour is $166.67. The maximum Tuition Assistance payable per individual per year is set annually by Commandant (G-WT) for active duty, SELRES, Public Health Service personnel, and civilian employees. Once the member uses the maximum allotted amount per year, no waivers will be granted for additional money.
Payment for tuition and fees will not exceed the following caps:
- $250.00 per semester hour
- $166.67 per quarter hour
If you think that you may exceed your allowed cap for expenses there are other options available to you to help cover the additional expenses such as federal grants and scholarships.
