Georgia HERO Scholarship: The Georgia HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship Program was created to provide educational grant assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones or the children of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves. The grant is to attend an approved school for a maximum of up to four award years in the sum of $2,000.00 per award year. No person shall be eligible to receive grant assistance provided under the subsection in excess of $8,000.00.
Eligibility: to be eligible to apply for a Georgia HERO Scholarship grant, you must meet one of the following criteria:
a) Be a member of the Georgia National Guard or a U.S. Military Reservist who is a Georgia resident that was deployed outside the U.S. for active duty service on or after May 3, 2005 to a location designed as a combat zone and served in such combat zone for at least 181 consecutive days; or
b) Be a daughter or son who parent was a member of the Georgia National Guard or the U.S. Military Reserves who is a Georgia resident that was deployed outside the U.S. for active duty servie on or after May 3, 2005 to a location designed as a combat zone and served in such combat zone for at least 181 consecutive days, or was killed or totally disabled during such service.
c) A student whose parent was killed or received a 100% disability as a result of injuries recevied in such combat zone shall receive up to a maximum of four award years regardless of the time such student's parents were on active service in such combat zone (Sections 20-3-486 and 20-3-485 of the Georgia State Code).
