Kentucky Veteran Dependent Tuition Waiver: A waiver of tuition is an education benefit provided by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in recognition of military service of certain Kentucky veterans.
Eligibility: There are three different kinds of exemption with separate eligibility requirements:
- KRS 164.505 Exemption from matriculation or tuition fee of dependents, un-remarried widow or widower of members of the Armed Forces or of members of the Kentucky National Guard killed while in service or having died as a result of service-connected disability and discharged under honorable conditions. Applies only to Kentucky's state-operated colleges, universities and vocational schools. State residency requirements apply.
- KRS 164.507 Exemption from matriculation of tuition fee for un-remarried spouse or child of a deceased veteran if the veteran served in the Armed Forces of the United States during a national emergency, wars declared by Congress, or actions of the United Nations and received a discharge under honorable conditions; or died while on active duty; or died as a result of a service-connected disability acquired while on active duty and received a discharge under honorable conditions. The service member must have been either a resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky at the time of death or married to a Kentucky resident at the time of death; and was discharged under honorable conditions.
- KRS 164.515 Exemption from matriculation or tuition fee for spouse or child of certain permanently and totally disabled veterans of the Armed Forces, the Kentucky National Guard or Reserves, former prisoners of war, or member of the Armed Forces missing in action. The veteran must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky or married to a Kentucky resident, and was discharged under honorable conditions. A deceased veteran must have been permanently and totally disabled at the time of death, and met the Kentucky residency requirements.
NOTE: for KRS 164.507 AND KRS 164.515 The spouse, regardless of age, and any child, stepchild, or orphan under age 23 shall not be required to pay any matriculation or tuition fees upon his/her admission to any state-supported institution of higher education or to any state-supported vocational training school for a period not in excess of thirty-six (36) months in order to obtain a diploma, not in excess of the lesser number of months required for a certificate of completion.
