Minnesota War Orphan Education Program: Admission to Minnesota "institutions of university grade" free of tuition until a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree)has been obtained. The University of Minnesota will begin waiving tuition for War Orphans in fall semester 2006. NOTE:Free tuition does notapply to private colleges or universities. A maximum payment of $750.00 in any one fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) will be paid. This amount may be used for fees, books & supplies, and/or room and board. At institutions where the free tuition part of the program does not apply, it may also be used toward tuition. This program may be used at the following institutions located within the State of Minnesota: state universities, community colleges, vocational technical colleges, any campus of the University of Minnesota, or any other college of higher learning which has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools: a law school approved by the Supreme Court, a theological seminary, a nursing school approved by the Board of Nursing, or a vocational technical trade or business school approved by the State Department of Education.
Eligibility: The applicant (War Orphan) shall be a resident of the State of Minnesotafor at least two years immediately prior to application. The deceased veteran (parent) must have been a Minnesota resident atthe time of entry on active military duty and for the six months immediatelypreceding entry on active duty.The veteran must have died while on active duty, oras a result of a service connected condition. This determination is made by the U.S.Department of Veterans Affairs (US DVA), or other instrumentality of theUnited States. The definition of "veteran's child" includes birth or adoption, but does not include stepchildren or foster children.
