North Carolina Scholarships for Children of Disabled, MIA/POW or KIA Veterans: In appreciation for the service and sacrifices of North Carolina's war veterans, a four year scholarship program at North Carolina approved schools has been established for the qualifying children of certain class categories of deceased, disabled, combat, or POW/MIA veterans.
1. Class I-A: Veteran parent killed or dies in wartime service or dies as a result of service-connected condition incurred in wartime service as defined by the law. No limit on number awarded each year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used with 10 years. Nature of scholarship: a) Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institution; b) $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.
2. Class I-B: Veteran parent rated by USDVA as 100% disabled due to wartime service as defined in the law, and currently or at time of death drawing compensation for such disability. No limit on number awarded each year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years. Nature of scholarship: a) Free tuition and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions; b) $1,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.
3. Class II: Veteran parent rated by USDVA as 20% by less than 100% disabled due to wartime service as defined in the law, or a statutory award for arrested pulmonary tuberculosis and currently or at time of death drawing compensation. 100 awarded per year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used with 10 years. Nature of scholarship: a) Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions. b) $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.
4. Class III: Veteran parent is or was at time of death drawing pension for total and permanent disability as rated by the USDVA, or Veteran parent is a deceased war veteran who has honorably discharged and who does not quality under any other provision within this synopsis, provided such schild is less than 23 years year of age at the time of application for such scholarship. 100 awarded per year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic year (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years. Nature of scholarship: a) Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions. b) $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.
5. Class IV: Veteran parent was a prisoner of war or missing in action. No limit on number awarded per year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years. Nature of scholarship: a) Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions; b) $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.
